SM: General Electric unit GE Healthcare said today it has agreed to buy cancer diagnostic company Clarient. Clarient shareholders will receive $5 per common share and $20 per preferred share, each payable in cash. The transaction values Clarient at [$]580 million. Clarient's role in the molecular diagnostics sector, combined with GE Healthcare's strengths in diagnostic imaging, are expected to accelerate the development of new integrated tools for the diagnosis and characterization of cancer, according to the companies. GE Healthcare estimates that the global demand for cancer-profiling products and services is predicted to grow from [$]15 billion in 2009, to [$]47 billion by 2015.
